Mr. Montagna was a native and lifelong resident of Norfolk. He was the widower of Mary Ross Montagna. He retired as president of the family business, Montagna Shoes Inc., after 49 years employment. He was a member of St. Pius X Catholic Church, Norfolk and a member of American Federation of Musicians, Norfolk Local 125. He graduated from Maury High School and played trumpet with the Maury High School Band, the one and only local High School Jazz Band ensemble, and attended the Norfolk Division of William and Mary and played in their band which included Tommy Newsom, Ziggy Harrell, Bones Garrison, Pat Roberts, Al Runaldue, Frank Ficarra, John Derieux and other young local musicians. Following college, Lucian joined the Army and played in its band during World War II. He came back to Tidewater to join the family business and married Mary and started his family. Nevertheless, he remained in demand to play his jazz interpretations whenever needed when shows traveled through Tidewater including the local Pat Curtis Orchestra, which accompanied Shirley McLaine, Pearl Bailey, Rosemary Clooney, Tony Martin, Jack Shelton, Chris Vadala and many others. Lifelong friends Tommy Newsom, co-director of the Johnny Carson Tonight Show Band, called Lucian the poet of the Trumpet, always original, never predictable and Pat Curtis said he had an uncanny ability to hear what other musicians could not. Survivors include two daughters, Katherine M. Terribile of Charlottesville, Va., Gina M. Olykowski of Chesapeake, Va; two sons, Frank P. Montagna of Atlanta, Lucian F. Montagna Jr. of Norfolk; a brother, Joseph Montagna of Sun City Center, Fla.; and six grandchildren, Lucian , Cara, Paul, Kristine, Michael and Amber, his fiancee, June Francis Lawrence of Norfolk and many loving friends. A Mass of Christian Burial service will be celebrated at 11:00 A.M. Tuesday in St. Pius X Catholic Church by the Rev. William Dale. Burial will be at St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery. A Christian wake service will be held in St. Pius X Catholic Church at 7 p.m. Monday at 7 p.m. followed by the Rosary.
