Montagna, founder of Montagna’s Shoe Store, died Thursday in Elks National Home. He was 96. Mr. Montagna, a native of Norfolk, had retired after more than 47 years as president of the shoe chain, which he began in 1921 at 429 Granby St. In 1949, the business moved to 437 Granby St. Mr. Montagna served for four years as director of the Middle Atlantic Shoe Retailers Association. He came by his trade as the son of a cobbler, Guiseppe Montagna, who was a native of Sicily. The elder Montagna came to America in 1882. After saving his money for five years, he sent for his family, one of the first Italian families in Norfolk. Mr. Montagna was an honorary life member of Elks Lodge 38. He was a member of the Moose Lodge and the Musicians Union. He was a member of the Roma Lodge of the Sons of Italy. From 1957 to 1961, he served as Grand Venerable of the Grand Lodge Order Sons of Italy in America of the State of Virginia. He also served on the National Supreme Council. In 1963, he was presented the citation of the Stella Solidariet Italiana by the Republic of Italy for his part in fostering better relations between Italians and Americans. In 1965, he was selected by the Grand Lodge of Virginia for a meritorious award. Mr. Montagna was the widower of Agnes Cristina Montagna. Survivors include two sons, Joseph Montagna and Lucian Montagna, both of Norfolk; three sisters, Jennie Montagna and Annie Montagna, both of Norfolk, and Carmelina LaGiglia of Virginia Beach; two brothers, George Montagna and Anthony Montagna, both of Norfolk; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. A Joyful Mass of the Resurrection will be offered at 10 a.m. Monday in St. Pius X Catholic Church. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery. The family will be at H.D. Oliver Funeral Apartments, Norfolk, from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. A Christian wake service will be held at 7:30 p.m. Sunday in the funeral home.
