Richmond detective S. C. Crews was stabbed as he attempted to arrest David George Moore, 22, at a house on North Plumb St. in Richmond. Crews was reported in satisfactory condition at Johnson-Willis Hospital, where he is being treated for stab wounds on the left hand, stomach and throat. Moore was one of four persons arrested Wednesday by James City County sheriff's department deputies and Williamsburg police officers. All were charged with possession of dangerous drugs. After being booked at the city police station, Moore escaped as he was being transferred to the jail. Sheriff A. M. Brenegan said he received a report Saturday that Moore was in Richmond and he sent deputy W. R. Hutchens to arrest him. Hutchens, Crews, Richmond detective R. L. O’Brien and Frederick Scherberger II, a Newport News probation officer, went to the North Plumb St. house. Crews located Moore in the basement of the house and the escapee lunged at him with a knife, police said. Crews shot two or three times before O’Brien reached the scene and fired on Moore. Dr. C. L. Garrett, of the state medical examiner’s office, said Moore died of gunshot wounds in the chest and also had wounds in the arms and side. Those arrested along with Moore last week include Gregory Steven Persons, 22, Mario Contreras, 21, and Karen R. Lemay, 21. A preliminary hearing was tentatively set for Sept. 2 in James City County Court. Office of the Dead for Moore will be recited at 8 tonight in Weymouth Funeral Home chapel. A funeral service will be conducted at 9:45 a.m. Wednesday in Weymouth Funeral Home chapel by the Rev. John Dollard, pastor of St. Jerome’s Catholic Curch. Pallbearers will be Robert Casey, Francis Casey, Kenneth Roach, Harris Checketts, Fred Drew and Thomas Davenport. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Norfolk.
