A peculiar accident, which resulted in the immediate death of a colored man named Charles Morris, occurred in the Roper storage warehouse on Water Street yesterday afternoon. Morris was a laborer in the warehouse and while standing on the third floor of the building he had occasion to call to someone on the floor beneath. He went to the elevator way and looking down, was about to speak when the large elevator, which was coming from the floor above, struck him on the back and jammed him between it and the floor. He made no outcry and was evidently killed instantly, his back and arm being broken. It was some minutes before he was discovered, which only occurred after an investigation of the cause of the sudden stoppage of the elevator, which was due to the resistance of Morris’ body. The mangled remains were put on the elevator and City Coroner notified. The body remained in the warehouse all night and an inquest will be held this morning. Morris was a middle aged man, married and considered very industrious. Norfolk Virginian Sept. 30, 1893 Crushed by an Elevator Yesterday afternoon about 5 o’clock, Charles Morris, colored, an employee of the Roper Storage Company, at their new building, corner of Water and Church Streets, was crushed by their elevator and killed. He started on his usual round to see that all the windows in the building were closed. The windows on the second, third, and forth floors were secured and Charles started for the fifth and last story, when suddenly, Mr. W.B. Cheek, the superintendent, heard a peculiar noise and ran to the elevator shaft and looked up, witnessed a sight that was enough to make the strongest fed faint. Charles had evidently looked over the side of the elevator when too near the fifth floor and had been caught about the breast and with his head hanging under the floor and his feet dangling above, was crushed to death. He was about 20 years of age, a sober, steady and industrious man. The body was taken to his mother’s residence of Balsom’s Lane. The coroner was notified and this morning a jury will be summoned and inquest will be held Additional Comments: AA Unknown burial location in Norfolk File at: http://files.usgwarchives.net/va/norfolkcity/obits/m/morris7795gob.txt This file has been created by a form at http://www.genrecords.org/vafiles/ File size: 2.9 Kb
