Morrisette Fails to Rally from Stroke of Apoplexy Detective William S. Morrisette, one of the most universally esteemed members of the police force, died early yesterday morning at St. Vincent's Hospital as result of a stroke of apoplexy sustained Thursday. Funeral services will be conducted this afternoon at 4:30 o'clock at Brambleton Avenue Methodist Church, the Rev. J.T. Green, of that church, assisted by the Rev. J.A. Winn, D.D., of McKendree Methodist Church, officiating. "Captain Billy," as Officer Morrisette was affectionately known to all members of the police department and hundreds of other friends, was stricken early Thursday while on night emergency duty at police headquarters. When news of his death reached headquarters yesterday, the bell in the tower was tolled for half an hour, and the flag on the fire station was lowered to half mast out of respect to the officer who had answered his last emergency call. Born in North Carolina, Officer Morrisette had lived in Norfolk since early manhood. He first joined the police force in 1904 and two years later he resigned to return to the profession of travelling salesman, which he had followed prior to entering the department. In 1913 he became a substitute patrolman again and was promoted to rank of regular patrolman that year. Since that time he had been on the force continuously, assigned for the most part to duty in the detective bureau. He had figured in an number of prominent cases, including the police intervention in the car barn robbery in 1919, one of the most exciting episodes in the annals of the Norfolk department and had been cited on several occasions for meritorious conduct. Officer Morrisette is survived by his wife; a son, Melvin Morrisette; a daughter, Miss Alma Morrisette and three brothers, J.W., C.E. and J.E. Morrisette, all of Norfolk. He was a member of the Norfolk Police Social and Relief Association, the Police Pension Fund Association, the Norfolk Police Athletic Association, and the Norfolk Police Beneficial Association.
