About 9:30 o'clock the yard engine was backing down to the wharf, when by some means Mr. Morrisett, who was standing on the step of the tender, lost his footing and fell. Two wheels of the tender passed him, killing him almost instantly. Undertaker Williams was sent for and took the body to his undertaking establishment on Chestnut Street. Dr. F.M. Morgan, coroner, summoned the following jury: T.F. Humphries, Wm. Tilley, W.C. Meginley, Caleb West, Wm. Stook and Jessie Nicholas. After hearing the witnesses who saw the accident they returned a verdict that the deceased came to his (death) by the above cause and exonerated the railroad company from all blame. The deceased was a native of Camden County, N.C. and had only been living in Berkley about twelve months. ***************************************************************************** About 9:30 o'clock yesterday morning Walter Morrisett, a boy about 17 years old, employed by the Norfolk & Southern railroad, while standing on the steps of the tender near the wharf in Berkley, missed his footing and fell. The tender backing, ran over and killed the unfortunate boy. An inquest held at 4 p.m. brought in a verdict in accordance with the evidence. the deceased was a native of North Carolina, Camden County and came her several years ago. The New Daily Pilot September 24, 1895 ************************************************************************ The funeral of Mr. Walter Morrisett, who was accidentally killed on the Norfolk and Southern railroad in Berkley yesterday morning, took place yesterday afternoon at 4:30 o'clock from the residence of his parents on Berkley Avenue. The services were conducted by Rev. Dr. George H. Ray and the interment was in Magnolia Cemetery.
