Born Aug. 31, 1920, he often visited his relatives in the 1000 block of Rugby St. He was the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. James L. Mullen Sr. James retired after 42 years from the U.S. Postal Service as a mechanical engineer where he won numerous awards for cost-saving ideas on his job. He taught electronics and electrical classes at Crane High School in Chicago. He graduated from Booker T. Washington High School as an honor student and was a member of the National Honor Society. He also graduated from an apprentice program at Norfolk Naval Shipyard and RCA Institute in New York. After moving to Chicago, he attended and graduated from Coyne Electrical School with honors. He was a veteran of World War II and honorably discharged and was a Merchant Seaman for several years during the Korean Conflict carrying dangerous materials for our troops and he stated that his belief in God brought him home safely. He enjoyed traveling throughout the world where he met natives of various countries and learned to speak three languages fluently. He encouraged his brother Robert and late nephew, Robert ``Mickey'' Smith to attend and graduate from Coyne also. He studied music as a child where he learned to play classical music with the mandolin and guitar. He is survived by his sisters, Nancy S. Mullen and Vivian B. Mullen; brother, Robert H. (Yvonne) Mullen and daughter, Mary of Chicago. He was predeceased by his sister, Dorothy M. McClenney and brother, Manual Mullen. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews, great-nieces and -nephews, cousins and by the Lamb family in Brooklyn, N.Y. He maintained friendship with his postal co-workers and they visited each other often. James will be sorely missed. A funeral will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. in Graves Funeral Home by the Rev. Joseph Lassiter. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery .
