Patrick W. Murphy, a Ship-Keeper On Ways, Falls from Gang Plank While Boarding His Vessel. Patrick W. Murphy, an aged ship-keeper residing at No. 206 First Street, and employed on the converted yacht Wasp, now lying in ordinary at the navy yard, fell from a gang-plank while going aboard the Wasp at 4 o’clock Sunday afternoon and was drowned. Murphy screamed as he lost his balance and plunged into the water, and the cry being heard by two men who were passing in a boat, they hurried to his assistance and were in time to grab Murphy as he rose to the surface the first time. He was carried ashore and the usual remedied in case of drowning were used to bring him too. Finding that Murphy did not respond to treatment, his rescuers sent in a call to the yard dispensary for a doctor. The call was answered by Pharmacists McLarty and May, who worked over Murphy for an hour without reviving life in him. It is thought that the drowned man, who was between 75 and 80 years of age, died of shock. He was in the water not more than three minutes, and it is hardly possible that drowning would have taken place in so short a time. Murphy leaves one daughter, Sister Isadore, a Sister of Charity at St. Vincent’s Orphan Asylum in Baltimore. The funeral will take place this afternoon at 4 o’clock. The services will be conducted by Father T.J. Brady and the interment will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery in Norfolk.
