KILL DEVIL HILLS, N.C. – Retired Marine Major James Leo Murphy, 72, formerly of 
Norfolk, husband of Mrs. Isabelle Gaylor Murphy and son of Michael Joseph and 
Mrs. Margaret Anderson McDermin Murphy, died Friday in Portsmouth Naval 
Hospital.
He was a native of Norfolk.
Besides his wife, he is survived by a son, Kenneth Murphy of Ojai, Calif.; a 
daughter, Mrs. Hector C. McKnew Jr. of Newark, Ohio; a brother, Vincent R. 
Murphy of Washington; and five grandsons.
A funeral service will be held in H.D. Oliver Funeral Apartments Monday at 11 
a.m. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery.
