NORFOLK - John Murphy Jr., 42, of 1628 Vernon Drive died Thursday in Community 
Hospital, Roanoke.
A native of Norfolk, he was a son of John and Mrs. Bessie Harrell Murphy and the 
husband of Mrs. Doris Sawyer Murphy.
He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church and a former Naval Base 
electrician’s helper.
Besides his wife, he is survived by five sons, Eugene Murphy, John Murphy III, 
Kelvin L. Murphy, Melvin Murphy and Michael Murphy, and three daughters, Diane 
Murphy, Michelle Murphy, and Sherly Murphy, all of Norfolk; two brothers, Leroy 
Porter of Newport News and Joseph Porter of Baltimore; and a sister, Mrs. Essie 
Burton of Murfreesboro, N.C.
The body was taken to E. A. Hughes Funeral Home.
