Recently retired owner of White's Home & Auto Store in Tappahannock, "Big Jim" loved working and living on the Rappahannock River. Born in Utica, N.Y., he was raised in Portsmouth, R.I., became an accomplished winning competitive sailboat racer as a child and young man, graduated from Cardinal Farley Military Academy in upstate New York, served in the U.S. Navy, and moved to Virginia to work for National Cash Register Company in sales. In 1976, he pursued the "Great American Dream" by purchasing the White's Store in Tappahannock where he enjoyed working with the public and being a commercial waterman. He never met a stranger he couldn't visit with for awhile and share his knowledge of the latest fishing reports, his many and varied opinions, and friendship. He will be fondly remembered by his friends in the community for his wonderful sense of humor, joy, honesty, and love of fishing and crabbing. He is survived by his faithful life partner and wife of 44 years, Barbara S. Nannery; his beloved mother, Loretta B. Nannery of Portsmouth, R.I.; two devoted sons, Michael and Patrick; loving daughters-in-law, Stacey and Tracy; and four fabulous grandchildren whom he dearly loved, Colin, Dana, Madison and Meredith. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated for Jim by Father Anthony Marques at St. Timothy Catholic Church, Rte. 360 and Airport Road, in Tappahannock on Thursday, April 16, 2009 at 11 a.m. As there will be no immediate graveside service, the family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made in Jim's name to the Capital Improvements Fund of St. Timothy Catholic Church, P.O. Box 129, Tappahannock, Va. 22560.
