Oliver Funeral Apartments June, 2020 Ann Ameilia Lanigan Nardoianni, 94, died with family members attending her. She is preceded in death by her loving husband of 67 years, Raymond Thomas Nardoianni, her four sisters, Virginia, Patricia, Katherine and Mary Carolyn. She is survived by her 6 daughters, Mary Elizabeth Reilly (Michael), Kathleen Kunz (Ricky), Gina Marie Gaskins, Sheila Fleischer, Theresa Gibbs (Glen) and Sharon Scott; 8 grandchildren, Sean Reilly (Jennifer), Amber Smith (Will) Rocco Nardoianni, Sheila Cerqua (Jerry), Brandon Nardoianni, Erica Scott, Lee Fleischer, and Jessica Scott; 12 great-grandchildren, Fallon, Khira, Jacob, Maya, Sofia, Abigail, Raymond, Giavanna, Rihanna, Collin, Matthew & Cody. Ann was born in Norfolk, VA, and was proud of being a Virginian. Her roots go back to the beginning of the Jamestown Settlement, her 9th great-grandmother arriving in 1609. Her 8th great-grandfather gave Norfolk its name, so she was a true Norfolk native. She attended St. Joseph Villa in grade school in Richmond, VA, for 5 years, where she excelled academically and in sports, especially in swimming, diving, and her favorite, basketball, where she was named captain of the winning team. She returned to Norfolk to attend Holy Trinity High School. During WWII, she worked at the Norfolk Naval Base and the Army Base. She loved attending USO dances during the Swing Era. It was that music that brought her together with the love of her life, Raymond. They were married on 11/11/44 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. They had 6 daughters, who were provided a loving and happy childhood. Ann was an outstanding mother, involved in every way, serving as secretary of the St. Mary's Academy PTA, where she was also a sought-after room mother. She loved participating in mother/daughter basketball games, teaching her daughters games she had learned as a child, as well as fun songs from the 20s and 30s. She also taught them to do the Charleston and the Jitterbug. She could be fun and, at the same time, she was a no-nonsense disciplinarian. She often received praise for her well-behaved daughters. She was an outstanding cook, having learned Southern cooking from her mother and Italian cooking from her mother-in-law, when they lived for a year in Syracuse, NY. She enjoyed playing cards, Bingo and the occasional treat of going to Delaware with her cousins and friends to play the slots. She enjoyed watching Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy with her husband, Ray. She could work a crossword puzzle with a pen. She and Ray belonged to the Knights of Columbus, where they eventually began a catering business, Nardi-Anna Catering, after encouragement from club members for their many catered events for the club. They enjoyed great success for 10 years until they retired. Retirement did not slow them down. Between being the hub of their grandchildren's lives, providing a weekly gathering place for the large family and reliable presence for favors for their daughters, they found time to travel to Mexico, Ireland, Wales, England, France, Spain and their favorite, Italy, 7 times, once bringing 9 members of their immediate family from the U.S. In later years, after the passing of her dear Raymond, Ann expressed gratitude for the life she shared with him and for her daughters, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Most recently she would say, "I've had a good life." Because of the protocols recommended for COVID-19, the immediate family will have a private gathering at the gravesite on Monday and a Memorial Service for public attendance to be determined in the future.
