Virginian-Pilot, The (Norfolk, VA) - October 13, 1998
Velma Holmes Neal, 84, of the Holly Point Development of the city, died in 
her home on Oct. 9, 1998. 

A native of Berkley, she was the daughter of Stanley and Sophie Holmes, and 
a graduate of Virginia State College in Petersburg, Va. She retired from the 
city of Norfolk after serving as one of its first school traffic guards. 

Mrs. Neal was a lifelong member of First Baptist Church, Berkley, where she 
served faithfully as a member of the Deaconess Board. She was a member of 
the Elizabeth Fragrant Rose Chapter of the Eastern Star, and had been a 
member of the Amicitia Social and Savings Club for more than 56 years. 

She leaves to cherish her memory a loving husband, Andrew Neal; one son, 
Andrew Leonard Neal; two daughters, Millicent Neal Clark and Blanche Neal 
Duggins, all of Chesapeake; seven grandchildren, Kim Neal Yeaton, Robyn Neal 
Elder, Dana Neal Gill, Kendall B. Clark, Bradley A. Clark, Stacey D. Duggins 
and Shana T. Duggins; three great-grandchildren, Erica, Andrea and Allicyn 
Elder; one brother, Sidney L. Holmes Sr. of Virginia Beach; and a host of 
relatives and friends. 

A funeral will be conducted at noon Thursday in First Baptist Church, 
Berkley, by the Rev. William Tyree III. Burial will be in West Point 
Cemetery , Norfolk. Viewing will be Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. in 
Pretlow and Sons Funeral Home, Chesapeake. In lieu of flowers, memorial 
donations may be made to the Scholarship Fund of First Baptist Church, 
Berkley.
