Nelson, 49, veteran weatherman and port supervisor in Norfolk for Atlantic Weather Project, died Thursday night in his home, 330 Fairfax Ave., after a heart attack. He succeeded Lennert A. Gunnarson as AWP port supervisor here in July 1959. Before that, he held a similar post at the port of New York from 1949 to 1959, and also served in Boston. One of the pioneers of Atlantic Weather Project, founded during World War II, he had been with it 20 years. It is a joint Coast Guard-Weather Bureau project in which ocean weather data is recorded and disseminated for worldwide use. He was in his 30th year as a meteorologist, having started in the Bismarck, N.D. Weather Bureau. After three years there, he was transferred to the Medford, Ore. office and remained seven years. Born in Minneapolis, he was a son of Mrs. Elizabeth T. Nelson, now of San Diego, and the late Emil Nelson. Besides his mother, surviving are a sister, Miss Margaret Nelson of Los Angeles, and a brother, Francis Nelson of San Diego. The body will be taken from H. D. Oliver Funeral Apartments to Sacred Heart Catholic Church for a funeral service Monday at 10 a.m. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery.
