He was born in Winsted, Conn., and was retired from the U.S. Navy as a chief petty officer. He served during World War II in the Pacific Campaign and, after retirement, called Norfolk his home because of the Naval facilities, friends he had made, and his family whom he always wanted to be near. Survivors include four sons, Mike T. Nero, James Nero Jr. and his wife, Carol, and Randall C. Nero, all of Norfolk, and Steve Nero of Los Angeles, Calif.; a sister, Anne N. Carbone of Torrington, Conn.; two grandchildren, Kristin and Madeline Nero of Norfolk; and his former wife and lifelong friend, Doris Hummer of Seaford, Va. A graveside service will be conducted at 1 p.m. today in St. Mary's Cemetery by Fr. Edward L. Richardson. Cox Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
