The Norfolk Virginian Pilot June 14, 1938

Mrs. Mattie Chandler New, aged 70 years, widow of Henry Lee New, died at the 
residence of her daughter, Mrs. Mary L. Scarborough, 3122 Somme Avenue 
yesterday afternoon at 6:25 o’clock after a long illness. Mrs. New was a 
native of Charles City County but had been a resident of Norfolk for the past 
50 years. Surviving Mrs. New, besides Mrs. Scarborough, are two other 
daughters, Mrs. Walter D. Porter and Mrs. M.D. Williford, of Norfolk; four 
sons, William E., Ernest W., and Henry M. New, of Norfolk; and Herman L. New, 
of Craddock, one brother, John Chandler, of Charles City County; one sister, 
Mrs. Molly Gary, of Hampton, and nine grandchildren. Funeral services will be 
conducted Wednesday afternoon at 3:30 o’clock from the Derry Funeral Chapel, 
Colley and Harrington Avenue. Burial will be in Cedar Grove Cemetery.
