The Virginian-Pilot, Wednesday, August 23, 1961

NORFOLK - Mrs. Mattie Newbold of 951 Sheldon Ave. died Sunday in a Norfolk 
nursing home after a long illness.

She was a native of Hertford, N.C., daughter of Willis and Mrs. Mahalia Dempsey 
and the widow of Jack Newbold. She lived in Norfolk 26 years and made her home 
with a granddaughter, Mrs. Georgia Pennington.

Besides her granddaughter, she is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Mollie White of 
Newark, N.J., eight other grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

The body was taken to Hale Funeral Home. A funeral service will be conducted in 
Queen Street Baptist Church, of which she was a member, Thursday at 2 p.m. by 
the Rev. J. Jasper Freeman, pastor. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery.
