Virginian-Pilot, The (Norfolk, VA) - Friday, June 24, 1994 
Carrie Hewitt Newby of the 2800 block of Bayne Ave. died June 22, 1994, in her
residence.

She was born in Norfolk and was the widow of George H. Newby Sr. She was a
member of Basilica of St. Mary's of the Immaculate Conception, the Women's Club
and chairman of the Bereavement Committee.

Survivors include two daughters, Angela Gamell of Chesapeake and Carmelita Laing
of Newport News; three sons, George H. Newby Jr. of Norfolk, Vincent D. Newby
Sr. of Virginia Beach and Wendell A. Newby Sr. of Wilmington, Del.; four
sisters, Ruth Walls of Austin, Texas, Helen Byrdsong of Chicago, Lucille Reeves
of Chesapeake and Evelyn Motley of Louisville, Ky.; one brother, Robert S.
Hewitt Sr. of Norfolk; 13 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be conducted at 6 p.m. Sunday in Basilica of St. Mary's of the
Immaculate Conception by Father Walter Barrett. Burial will be at 10 a.m. Monday
in Calvary Cemetery . Friends may join the family at the residence. Graves
Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
