Newby of 2006 Hodges road, South Norfolk, who died in a local hospital at 10:40 p.m. March 7. The Rev. J. C. Diamond, pastor, officiated. Mrs. Gladys Cornish read the obituary. Pallbearers were H. C. Wright, E. T. Poole, E. S. Peters, A. Bryant, E. Brinkley and A. M. Smith. Mrs. Newby, daughter of the late William and Mrs. Catherine McPherson, was a native of South Norfolk and one of the area’s pioneer educators. She was a graduate of Hampton Institute, class of 1896. She conducted a private school for a number of years in South Norfolk. Her husband, John C. Newby, died some years ago. Mrs. Newby was a member of First Baptist Church, and an ardent church worker. She was a member of the choir and founder of the now active Busy Bee Club. She was a member and past office of the Order of Tents. Survivors are three sons, William M. Newby, John J. Newby, and J. E. Newby, all of Norfolk; a sister, Mrs. Neollus Swain, of Philadelphia, PA; nine grandchildren, four great grandchildren, one grand niece, and one grand nephew. Interment was in Mt. Olive Cemetery with Chatman’s Funeral Home in charge. Additional Comments: Mt.
