Virginian-Pilot, The (Norfolk, VA) - Tuesday, April 29, 1997 
Thomas L. Newby Jr. of the 1100 block of E. City Hall Ave. died April 26, 1997,
in a local hospital.

A native of Norfolk, he was a truck driver retired from Lewis Wholesale Tomato
Co. after more than 30 years and was the widower of Catherine Newby. He was a
member of Freedom Church of God in Christ, Norfolk, and the usher board. He was
a U.S. Army veteran.

Survivors include his daughter, Earline Roseboro; son, Thomas Newby III of
Norfolk; aunt, Ardelia Gill; two grandchildren, Alethia Roseboro and Deatrice
Newby; three great-grandchildren, AnQuan Roseboro, Da'Wan Heath and Danielle
Newby. Mr. Newby also leaves a host of other relatives and friends.

A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Thursday in Freedom Church of God in
Christ by the Rev. Francis Askew. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery , Norfolk.
The family will receive friends in the residence. Graves Funeral Home is in charge.
