Virginian-Pilot, The (Norfolk, VA) - April 10, 1991

Bessie Mae Newkirk, 71, of the 7100 block of Mamie Blvd., a retired domestic 
worker, died April 7, 1991, in a hospital.
Mrs. Newkirk, a native of Wilson, N.C., was the widow of Johnnie C. Newkirk. 
She was a Baptist.
Survivors include three daughters, Starris Chessom and Loraletta L. Newkirk, 
both of Norfolk, and Juanita Herbert of Hartford, Conn.; two sons, Kevin L. 
Newkirk and Ulysses Newkirk, both of Norfolk; a sister, Annie Mae Holden of 
Wilson; a brother, Roosevelt Knight of New York City; nine grandchildren and 
nine great-grandchildren.
The graveside service will be conducted at 11:30 a.m. Friday in Magnolia 
Cemetery by the Rev. J.L. Kearney Sr. Family and friends will assemble at 
11:15 a.m. at the cemetery. Hale Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
