Virginian-Pilot October 21, 1915
Joseph Plunkett Newman died early yesterday morning at the residence, 812 Duke 
street, following an attack of apoplexy. He was 70 years old. He had a slight 
attack of vertigo and a slight fall on Tuesday, but his condition was not regarded 
as serious. Mr. Newman was a native of Ireland, but had resided in Norfolk 40 
years and was well known and esteemed. He is survived by his widow. The funeral 
will take place at the above residence at 3 o’clock tomorrow afternoon. Burial 
will be in St. Mary’s cemetery.
