Smith, late yesterday afternoon, entered the house of Mrs. Kate Newman, 812 Duke street, one of his clients, at the solicitation of one of Mrs. Newman’s neighbors, he found her body lying at the foot of a steep flight of stairs in the rear of the house. She had evidently been extinct for several days. Fearing that Mrs. Newman, who was 74 years old and considered wealthy, had been a victim of foul play, Mr. Smith notified the police, and Detective W. C. Cruett was sent to the house to make an investigation. In the meantime, Coroner R. S. Kight was notified, and examined the body. Coroner Kight is of the opinion that the woman had suffered a stroke of heart trouble while coming down the stairs. The detective’s investigation failed to reveal any clue upon which to base a theory of foul play. Nothing in the house had been disturbed. Mrs. Newman was considered as rather eccentric by her neighbors, and, although she was said to have been wealthy, she lived all alone. When neighbors failed to see her about the house for several days, one of them decided that something was wrong, and, knowing that Mr. Smith was Mrs. Newman’s attorney, called him by telephone and advised him to go to the house and investigate. Mrs. Newman was the widow of Joseph P. Newman and had lived practically all her life in Norfolk. She was a well-known and highly esteemed woman. She was a sister of the late John Dollard, whose brutal murder several years ago many residents of the city recall. She leaves no children and no immediate relatives besides Mrs. James W. Buchanan, of Ocean View, a niece. The funeral will take place at Sacred Heart Catholic church Monday morning at 10 o’clock. Interment will be in St. Mary’s cemetery.
