Newsome Sr. of 613 Landing St., a deacon of First Baptist Church, Bute St., died Friday in a local hospital. A native of Norfolk, he was a son of William Newsome and Mrs. Mabel Parker Newsome and the husband of the late Mrs. Mearlena Newsome. He was a retired merchant. Newsome also was a member of the Music Committee, Baptist Training Union, the board of First Baptist Church Home for the Aged, and Sunday School organist. He also was organist for Graves Funeral Home, a member of the Progressive Mens League, Musician Union Local 702, and the Hunton YMCA. Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Barbara E. Peterson, of Norfolk; a son, Earl H. Newsome Jr., of Norfolk; a brother, Willie Newsome, of New York, four grandchildren, and a great-grandchild. A funeral service will be held at noon Wednesday in First Baptist Church by the Rev. E. Paul Simms. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Graves Funeral Home has charge. The body will be taken to the church at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday.
