James Jefferson Alton Nichols, age 93, passed away in his home on Saturday, June 
12, 2021. James was born July 9, 1927, in Portsmouth, VA. He was a dedicated 
member of The Basilica of Saint Mary's Catholic Church in Norfolk, VA. He attended 
and graduated from St. Joseph High School, Norfolk, VA. James retired Honorably 
from the United States Army, Artillery Branch, after 21 years and 3 months at the 
rank/grade of Sergeant First Class/E-7, after a nearly two-year tour in Vietnam 
from June 1967 to March 1969. He also worked at the Newport News Shipbuilding and 
Drydock for 16 years. James' memory will live on in the hearts and minds of his 
surviving family and friends. He leaves behind to cherish his memory two sisters, 
Leola Nichols Etheridge and Josephine B. Nichols Cheek, many nieces, nephews and 
other relatives. Viewing will be held on Monday, 21 June 2021, from 2:00 pm to 
6:00 pm at Graves Funeral Home, 1631 Church Street, Norfolk, VA 23504, and grave-
side service will be Tuesday, 22 June 2021, at 11:00 am at Saint Mary's Catholic 
Cemetery, 3000 Church Street, Norfolk, Virginia 23504.
