Horace Francis Nichols Sr., of the 1300 block of W. 26th St., died June 22, 1999, 
at his residence.

Born in Portsmouth, he was a retired foundry worker from the Norfolk Naval 
Shipyard and a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II. He was a Catholic and was 
predeceased by his parents, Lottie B. Nichols and Ernest Nichols Sr.

Survivors include his wife of 50 years, Olethia C. Nichols of the home; five 
daughters, Lt. Col. Roberta Nichols-Covin of Hinesville, Ga., Rita F. Parker of 
Connecticut, Patricia A. Nichols and Letitia A. Nichols, both of Norfolk, and 
Myron Young of Arizona; seven sons, Horace Nichols Jr., Edward Nichols, Anthony 
Nichols, Christopher Nichols, Kenneth Nichols and Byron Nichols, all of Norfolk, 
and Staff Sgt. Darryl Nichols Sr. of Maryland; two sisters, Leola Etheridge and 
Josephine Cheek, both of Norfolk; a brother, James Nichols of Portsmouth; mother-
in-law, Annie Freeman, and father-in-law, Dewitt Freeman, both of Bronx, N.Y.; 21 
grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and 
friends.

A funeral will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at Basilica of St. Mary of the 
Immaculate Conception Church by Monsignor Walter Barrett. Burial will be in St. 
Mary's Cemetery. The remains will be ready for viewing from 3:30 to 8 p.m. today 
at Carlos A. Howard Funeral Home, Norfolk Chapel. The family will assemble at 9 
a.m. at the residence for the procession. In lieu of flowers, the family requests 
that donations be made to the Basilica of St. Mary's Steeple Fund.
