Nicholson, Veteran of Sea, Dies on Ship Comdr. (USMS) Joseph Thomas Nicholson, 50, of Norfolk, chief engineer on the Jason, a ship of the Boland Cornelius Line, died early yesterday aboard the ship in New York harbor. A follower of the sea virtually all his life, Commander Nicholson was awarded a Presidential citation for exceptional work aboard the U.S.S. Malta in World War I. The ship's engines broke down 1800 miles at sea, and through his efforts they were repaired after two days' work, and the ship was brought safely into port. Commander Nicholson had been with the Boland & Cornelius Line, operating between Norfolk and New York, for the past eight years, first as chief engineer of the Achilles and then as chief engineer of the Jason. Commander Nicholson was a native of Hamilton, N.C. and had lived in Norfolk for 36 years. He made his home at 4316 Newport avenue. He was a member of Park Place Baptist Church, Ruth Lodge 89, A.F. & A.M., Scottish Rite Masons Woodmen of the World. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Annie D. Nicholson, of Norfolk; a son, A.S. Nicholson, of Norfolk and a sister, Mrs. Lillie Walker, of Rocky Mount, N.C. The body will be brought to the Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home for funeral services and burial in Norfolk.
