Dwayne Richard Niswonger died June 3, 2006. He was born June 1, 1931, in Dayton, 
Ohio, one of 12 children.

He retired February 1973, after 23 years, from the United States Navy as a Chief 
Hospital Corpsman. He served with the USMC at Camp LeJuene, N.C., and was 
stationed overseas at Ponce, Puerto Rico, and the Panama Canal Zone. Dwayne was 
one of the first Planksmen commissioned on the USS La Moure County.

After retirement, Dwayne became a Registered Nurse and worked for many years at 
Sentara Bayside Hospital Emergency Room and then at Walter Reed Convalescent 
Center, doing private duty.

Survivors include his loving wife, Dorothy Niswonger; daughter, Sharon Clayton; 
son, Shawn Niswonger; two grandchildren, James Dwayne Griffin and Shana Star 
Norman; three great-grandchildren, Sabastian and Cherith Norman, Hayley Renee Ann 
Griffin, and one not yet born; best friend, Brother Reggie Thomas; man's best 
friend, his dog, "Miss Muffy"; sister, Shirley Hoover; brother, Isaac Niswonger 
Jr. and wife, Barbara; a host of nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Resurrection conducted by Father Jim Curran will be held Friday, June 9, 
at 11 a.m. at St. Therese Catholic Church. Interment with full military honors 
will be 2:30 p.m. in St. Mary's Cemetery, 3000 Church St., Norfolk, Va.

The family will receive friends Thursday from 7 until 8:30 p.m. at Hogg Funeral 
Home, Gloucester Point.

In Dwayne's memory, memorial contributions may be made to Abingdon Volunteer Fire 
and Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 9, Bena, VA 23018 or The American Cancer Society c/o
