With a big heart and always ready to help demeanor, her sage advice and opinions were often first solicited, especially when regarding family dynamics. She was a shining light long before Google was invented. She was born in Lillybrook, West Virginia, a community near Beckley, West Virginia. She lived in and around various places near Beckley until she graduated from High School. At that time, she was recruited to take a civil service position, working for the Federal Government in Washington, DC. Her first assignment was working for the National Science Foundation. Many years later and many other postings afterward, she retired from Civil service. Still ambitious after her CS retirement, she then embarked upon another career working for the NEX Headquarters Command Facilities Department. Barbara shared a wonderful life with her husband, Jerry, with whom she celebrated 62 years of marriage. They first met in 1962 in Arlington, Virginia, where she was living at the time. Jerry was new to the area after returning from an overseas assignment with the U. S. Navy. They married in 1963, and, with Jerry’s U.S. Naval career, traveled from one side of the globe to another along with their two children. Two tours in Spain, one in the Philippines, another in D.C., then South Florida, and finally to Norfolk VA. Barbara experienced first- hand seeing the beauty of the Florida Keys waters, bullfights in Spain, learned to drink wine from a leather wine-skin “Bota,” and fed peanuts to wild baboons atop the Rock of Gibraltar. In the Philippines, she saw some really big snakes in the wild and an inactive, still-steaming volcano, and (with little success) also attempted to ride a Carabao. Much to the delight and detriment of her husband’s waistline, she also learned to cook many tasty Spanish and Filipino dishes. Jerry and Barbara were blessed with two wonderful children, Lorie and Jennifer, along with their respective husbands, Tim and Woodie. Barbara also adored her two grandchildren, Cody and Brooke. Barbara was predeceased by her father, Carl (Bo), mother, Alma, and brother, Johnny. Her entire family would once again like to extend our great appreciation to the entire staff of the long-term care facility, Our Lady of Perpetual Help. Because of her illness, she was in residence there for four years. Their dedication to the dignity and well-being of the residents is unparalleled. Their banner of “Heroes live here” does not give them sufficient credit due for their unwavering diligence. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the charity of your choice in memory of Barbara.
