NUNN, CIVIC LEADER AT VIEW, DIES Mrs. Kate B. Nunn, 91, leader in the establishment of Holy Trinity Catholic Church and a resident of Ocean View for 50 years, died at 5:28 p.m. yesterday in a Norfolk hospital. Mrs. Nunn led a campaign about 1913 to set up a Catholic mission at Ocean View. Masses were held at the casino of the Ocean View Amusement Park. She then was instrumental in getting the first pastor and the first parish organized in Ocean View. A native of Atlanta, Ga., she was a staunch supporter of Ocean View and a pioneer member of the Ocean View Garden Club. Active in civic and charitable affairs, she was a member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church, the Blessed Virgin Sodality of that church, the National Council of Catholic Women, a former representative on the Virginia State Federation of Garden Clubs and an active worker in the Red Cross. Most Modest Worker She was cited in 1949 as the most "modest worker for Norfolk's Red Feather Drive." A tiny woman with silver white hair and twinkling eyes, she had an enviable record as a solicitor for the Community Chest in the Ocean View District. She told newsmen during that campaign: "I don't pay any attention to what you get out of drives, the cause is the only thing that matters to me. None of those luncheons for me. I collect the money and my captain comes and gets it. " She was noted for her vitality and youthfulness and said on one occasion: "I played auction bridge last night. Did you ever hear of such an old-fashioned thing? Why, auction is as old as I am. Won the prize, anyway. I think I'll learn to play Canasta now...." Stalwart Champion Her community spirit was doubly strong, it was pointed out in a newspaper account in 1949. She was ever ready with a "spirited defense" against any possible slurs cast on Ocean View. In some respects, too, she was the nemesis of the Norfolk City Council - who dared not cross her path. She appeared before the city legislators on numerous occasions, fighting this time for grade crossings over bumpy streetcar tracks and another time for some other community betterment or beautification project. The widow of Levi Lemuel Nunn, she was the daughter of William Kirkland and Mrs. Charlotte McGovern Mason. She is survived by two daughters, Mrs. F.L. McEnany of Bridgeport, Conn. and Mrs. C.H. Bockelmann of Warwick; one son, Lawrence L. Nunn of Norfolk; eight grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren. The body will be taken from the H.D. Oliver Funeral Apartments to Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Ocean View, for services tomorrow at 10 a.m. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery. Rosary services will be conducted at the funeral apartments tonight at 8 o'clock. **************************************************************************** NORFOLK—The body of Mrs. Kate B.
