He is survived by a widow, eight children, a brother, Peter Oakes, of Portsmouth, and two sisters, Mrs. Loughran, of New York, and Mrs. Annie Platto, of Norfolk. Mr. Oakes had been a resident of Norfolk for thirty-five years. He was a keeper of the Hebrew cemetery for thirty years. He was for some years a member of the volunteer fire department before Norfolk had a paid department.
