O'Brien, 83, died Oct. 15, 2001, at Seaside Health Center at Atlantic Shores Retirement Community. He was a native of Portsmouth and was predeceased by his wife, Vera F. O'Brien; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. William J. O'Brien; and three sisters, Mary Frances Pitt, Catherine O'Brien and Camilla O'Brien. His survivors include his daughter, Mary Catherine O'Brien; his son, James O'Brien; a sister, Regina McPadden; and numerous nieces and nephews. During World War II he served his country with dedication and distinction and was awarded the Bronze Star, the Silver Star and the Purple Heart. He was a member of Star of the Sea Catholic Church, Virginia Beach, where the Mass of Resurrection will be celebrated by his nephew, Msgr. William L. Pitt at 7:30 p.m. today. Burial will take place at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Mary's Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Catholic High School Building Fund, 4552 Princess Anne Road, Virginia Beach, VA 23462.
