He was the husband of Ethel Vanderberry O’Connor and was a member of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church. Dr. O’Connor was a graduate of St. Mary’s Male Academy, Norfolk, and Washington and Lee University. He received his doctor of dental surgery degree from the University of Maryland. He was a past chairman of the Navy YMCA Forum and the National Catholic Community Service-USO and a former member of the USO board of directors; a past president of the Catholic Family and Children’s Service and a former member of its board; a past co-chairman of the National Conference of Christians and Jews; a past president of the Norfolk Torch Club, Norfolk Ryan Club, Norfolk Chapter of the Izaak Walton League and the 35th Street Businessmen’s Association; and a past member of the Norfolk Democratic City Committee. He was a past president of the Holy Name Society of both the Sacred Heart and Blessed Sacrament parishes; a member of the Lay Board at Blessed Sacrament and chairman of the building committee of Blessed Sacrament School; and a former member of the building committee of Norfolk Catholic High School. He had received numerous awards, including the Father Kealy Council, Knights of Columbus, Civic Award in 1964; Distinguished Service Award of the Norfolk chapter of the American Cancer Society in 1966; Izaak Walton League and National Catholic Community Service Distinguished Service awards; and the 1968 Brotherhood Award of the National Conference of Christians and Jews. He was a past exalted ruler of Norfolk Elks Lodge 38, a past district deputy and Virginia state deputy of the Knights of Columbus and a graduate member of Xi Psi Phi dental fraternity. Among the organizations in which he held life memberships were the Elks; Knights of Columbus, Fourth Degree; Izaak Walton League; Norfolk Torch and Ryan clubs; and Pirrie Fauchard Academy Dental. Other survivors include a daughter, Patricia O. Hilliard of Virginia Beach; two sons, Dr. Frank J. O’Connor Jr. of Virginia Beach and Thomas C. O’Connor of Signal Mountain, Tenn.; and 11 grandchildren. A joyful Mass of the Resurrection will be said at noon Tuesday in Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, with burial in St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery.
