Monsignor O’Farrell, who was 76 years old, died at 6:30 yesterday afternoon in the hospital, to which he had been confined since September, 1923. He had been critically ill, however, only since last Friday. Heart disease was given as the principal cause of death. While complete details of the funeral arrangements for the aged clergyman had not been completed today, Rev. Edward A. Brosnan, who succeeded him as pastor of St. Mary’s when he went to the hospital, announced that the parishioners whom he loved and served in life will have an opportunity to view his body in death. Take Body to Church The body will be taken from the hospital shortly after noon tomorrow and will be carried to the church, two funerals to be held in the church tomorrow morning making it impossible to place the body there earlier. From the time of the arrival of the body at the church, a continuous guard of honor, composed of Knights of Columbus, will stand over it and the public will be permitted to walk past. Father Brosnan said this morning that those in charge of the funeral are working on a list of pallbearers and that it may be completed this afternoon. He said that, because of the statewide character of the work of Monsignor O’Farrell, as vicar-general of the diocese and second ranking clergyman of the state, it was necessary to await upon advice from priests in different sections who likely would participate. Two classmates of Monsignor O’Farrell will, at his request, take leading parts in the funeral services. Father Edward Tearney, of Holy Cross church, Lynchburg, will officiate at the requiem mass, while Father Joseph Cunnane, of St. Andrew’s church, will preach the funeral sermon. Fifty Clergymen to Attend In addition to the priests who will actively participate in the impressive ceremonies with which the church will inter one of its serving sons, more than fifty clergymen from different parts of the state and nation, who at one time or another during the long career of Monsignor O’Farrell were associated with him, will occupy seats near the altar. Because of illness, Bishop D. J. O’Connell, Monsignor O’Farrell’s only superior in the state, will not be able to attend. He will be represented, however, by the Very Rev. Felix Kaup, chancellor. The ceremonies will be conducted with the impressive ritual which the tradition of the Holy Catholic church decrees shall obtain in the funeral of her sons. Immediately following the services at the church, the body will be interred in St. Mary’s cemetery. Additional Comments: Partial obituary.
