He retired as principal of Maury in 1957 and lived in Point Harbor five years. A native of Princess Anne County, he was the husband of Mrs. Mary Parker Old and a son of the late James E. and Mrs. Etta Jarvis Old. He attended elementary schools in Norfolk and high school at Oceana. He graduated from Virginia Polytechnic Institute as a chemical engineer and did graduate work at Columbia University. His first employment in Norfolk was with F.S. Royster Guano Co. In 1923 he joined the Norfolk public school system as a teacher at Blair Junior High School. Prior to that he was employed by the Norfolk Naval Shipyard three years. He became assistant principal of Blair Junior High School in 1929 and accepted a similar position at Maury High School in 1939. He became vocational director for the city schools in 1943 and served seven years. Upon the retirement of A.B. Bristow as principal of Maury High School in 1950, he became principal and served seven years before retiring because of ill health. During his 35 years of educational work in Norfolk, Old was a member of the Norfolk Kiwanis Club, Norfolk Education Association, Virginia Education Association, American Vocational Association, Virginia Vocational Association, and Tidewater Industrial Arts and Vocational Club. A group of 130 teachers attended his retirement party when he left Maury High School. At that time he was praised for his work in the city school system and was presented with a lifetime pass to all Maury home athletic events by Cris Christensen on behalf of the school athletic department. Old was a Baptist and treasurer of the Outer Banks Recreation Association, at Kitty Hawk, N.C. Besides his wife, he is survived by a son, Arthur D. Old of Fulton, N.Y., and two sisters, Mrs. S.O. Crawley of Norfolk and Mrs. E.F. Butt of Lynnhaven, Virginia Beach. The body was taken to H.D. Oliver Funeral Apartments, Norfolk, where a funeral service will be held Friday at 2 p.m. DST by the Rev. William C. Hoffman of St. Bride's Episcopal Church. Burial will be in Magnolia Cemetery. *************** OLD, JAMES ELISHA, JR - At his residence at Point Harbor, N.C., Wednesday June 15th, 1965, at 6:45 p.m. JAMES ELISHA OLD, JR., husband of Mrs. Mary Parker Old, and son of the late James E., Sr. and Mrs. Etta Jarvis Old, in the 70th year of his age. Services at the H.D. Oliver Funeral Apartments, 1501 Colonial Ave., Norfolk, Friday at 2 p.m. (D.S.T.) Friends of the family are invited to attend. Interment, Magnolia Cemetery.
