J. PADGETT RETIRED ESSO OFFICIAL DIES IN CALIFORNIA Richmond - Reginald Joseph Padgett, 56, of 6709 Horsepen Rd., Richmond, died unexpectedly in San Diego, Calif, Wednesday afternoon. He and his wife, Ruby, were visiting their daughter, Mary L. Swanson and her family there. Death occurred en route to a hospital after a heart attack. They had gone to California in early September for an extended visit. An annuitant of the Esso Standard Oil Co., Mr. Padgett retired last October in Richmond as assistant personnel manager of the Virginia-West Virginia Division after service of 35 years. A native of Alexandria, he completed his schooling there after which he joined Esso here in Norfolk in 1923 as a service station attendant. He remained in Norfolk until 1933, when he transferred to the accounting office in Richmond. In addition to his wife and daughter, two sons survive. The elder, Reginald Cunningham Padgett, lives in Richmond, while the younger, Robert Delano, lives in Hampton. Five grandchildren also survive. Mr. Padgett was a member of St. Bridget's Catholic Church in Richmond and of the Knights of Columbus. The body is being flown to Norfolk today.
