Virginia Beach - Catherine Christine Panella, 91, passed away on December 13, 
2013. Catherine was born in Hostetter, PA, and has lived in the Tidewater area for 
most of her life. She was the daughter of the late Julianna and Matthew Mehal, and 
was also preceded in death by eight brothers and sisters. She was a member of the 
W.A.V.E.S. while she served in the US Navy during WWII, and was a member of the 
Silver Salts. Catherine also was a member of the Roma Lodge of Virginia Beach, and 
St. Nicholas Catholic Church. Survivors include her husband of 63 years, Frank A. 
Panella, two daughters, Mary Christine Smith and her husband Russell C. Smith III, 
of Virginia Beach, and Martha Anne Panella and her husband William B. Cook of 
Pembroke, VA, three grandchildren, Russell C. Smith IV, Kira Anne Cook, and 
William Conan Cook, and three great grandchildren, Abigail Danae Cook, Lauren 
Grace Smith, and Nathaniel Austin Smith. The family will receive friends from 6-7 
p.m. on Tuesday December 17, 2013, in H.D. Oliver Funeral Apts., Laskin Rd. 
Chapel. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held in St. Nicholas Catholic Church on 
Wednesday at 11 a.m. with a reception immediately following in the church social 
hall. Interment will be held in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery in Norfolk. In lieu 
of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Adelphoi youth service 
organization, 352 Main St., Latrobe, PA 15650. Online condolences may be made to
