PARKER Prominent Jurist And Soldier Succumbs After a Long Illness Judge George Doniphan Parker, one of the most prominent and highly respected citizens of this community, died at his residence, 109 Pine street, yesterday morning at 5:45 o'clock after a lingering illness of about five years. Judge Parker was born in Augusta, Ky, in 1836 and received his early education in Missouri, afterwards coming to Virginia in 1854 and graduating at the Virginia Military Institute, Lexington, Va. Subsequently he studied law, which profession he followed with much success and distinction in Norfolk for many years. Later the law firm of Parker & Allen was formed, which continued for twelve years, or until the deceased was elected commonwealth's attorney in 1883 by the democrats of Norfolk county, serving one term, to 1886, when he was elected judge, in which office he continued one term. At the outbreak of the Civil War he entered the service of the state and was appointed to the rank of captain under the command of General Whiting. He was captured at Fort Fisher while serving with Col. William Lamb, of Norfolk, and subsequently paroled. Judge Parker married Miss Urbanna Howey, of Wilmington, N.C., who survives him, with other relatives. A son, George D. Parker, Jr., now town attorney; four sisters, Miss Sue Parker, principal of the Berkley graded school for a number of years; Mrs. W.H. Wrenn, Mrs. J.J. Ottley, of Berkley and Mrs. E.D. Duval of Washington, D.C. and one brother, Maj. L.O. Parker, of California, survive him. The funeral will take place Saturday morning at 11 o'clock, Rev. E.W. Cowling, rector of St. Thomas' Episcopal Church, of which the deceased was a prominent member and one of the charter members, officiating. The interment will be in Magnolia Cemetery.
