Virginian-Pilot, The (Norfolk, VA) - Friday, March 17, 2000 
Iris N. Patterson, 96, of 131st St., passed away March 13, 2000.

She was born in Norfolk on March 10, 1904, the second of three children born to
Ben and Maggie Northington, and attended Norfolk public schools. She met and
married Phillip Patterson at a young age. They moved to New York and enjoyed
many years of happiness together until his untimely demise. A homemaker and a
career woman, she was very active in her community and was a lifetime member of
the NAACP. She was a dedicated member of First Baptist Church Bute Street, where
she served as an usher and continued that dedication upon joining the Abyssinia
Baptist Church in New York City in March 1930. At Abyssinia she served as
secretary and treasurer for the Mattie Fletcher Powell Volunteer Club. She would
volunteer her time and energy to the church whenever she was needed.

Iris leaves to mourn a niece, Lavonia Brown; a nephew, Edward Northington;
grandnieces, grandnephews and a great-grandniece. In recent years, she was
adopted by her ``New York niece,'' Ernistine Stroud, and family. She will also
be greatly missed by her church family and a number of friends and neighbors.

We all loved Iris, but the Lord loved her best.

A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. today at Hale Funeral Home, Norfolk Chapel, by
the Rev. Frank Gunns. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery .
