Mr. Payne was born Sept. 30, 1921, in Norfolk, to Leonard Kimball Payne and Helen McLaughlin Payne. He was married for 56 years to Mary John Moore Payne of Lynchburg. They started their life together in Lynchburg where Mr. Payne worked for the Gary Steel Corporation. The family later moved to Lexington. Mr. Payne retired in 1987 from his position as purchasing manager for Modine Manufacturing Company in Buena Vista. He and Mary John moved to White Stone in 1996 to be close to the water that he loved. A veteran of the Navy, Mr. Payne was a past commander of the American Legion Old Dominion Post 67 in Norfolk. He was also a past member of the Virginia Beach Society of 40 and 8, and the Virginia Yacht Club. He was a life member and past president of the National Association of Purchasing Management-Virginia, Inc. A devoted Rotarian, he was a Paul Harris Fellow and participated in many activities of the Kilmarnock/White Stone Rotary Club. He also volunteered at the Northern Neck Free Health Clinic. Kimball had a special attachment and dedication to those with mental and/or physical disabilities. He was a longtime board member and past president of the Rockbridge Area Occupational Center and he volunteered and served as a board member of the Lewis B. Puller Center in Gloucester. He was predeceased by his sister, Wilhemenia Van Namee. Kimball is survived by his wife, Mary John; their four children and spouses, Leonard Kimball Payne III and Leslie Miller Payne of Lynchburg, William Hodges Payne of Stafford, John Thomas and Kathleen Ferreira Payne of Stafford and Phillip Churchill and Elizabeth Tazewell Payne Rinehart of Virginia Beach; eight grandchildren, Helen Payne Jarrett, Leonard Kimball Payne IV, Jean Payne Pfautz, Samuel Miller Payne , Mary Rachel Payne, Jacob Thomas Payne, Rachael Elizabeth Payne and Jessica Anne Rinehart; two great-grandchildren, Rebecca Tazewell Jarrett and Leslie Anne Jarrett; and a nephew, Jim Van Namee of Colorado Springs. A Mass of the Resurrection will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday in Saint Francis de Sales Parish, Kilmarnock, with Father James C. Bruse officiating. Reception to follow. Interment will be in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery, Norfolk, at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Lewis B.
