Virginian-Pilot, The (Norfolk, VA) - Monday, May 14, 1990 
Joseph Slack Payne, 75, of the 700 block of Graydon Ave., a retired engineer, 
died May 13, 1990, in a hospital. Mr. Payne, a native of Norfolk, had retired 
from the city of Norfolk after 30 years. 

He was a member of First Presbyterian Church. He was also a member of the 
Engineers Club of Hampton Roads and the Society of American Military 
Engineers. 

Survivors include his wife, Nettie Elizabeth Brimmer Payne; a daughter, 
Shirley P. Thornton of Virginia Beach; a son, Joseph S. Payne Jr. of Norfolk; 
a sister, Margaret P. Shewmake of Virginia Beach; and three grandchildren.

The funeral will be conducted at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday in H.D. Oliver Funeral 
Apartments, Norfolk, by the Rev. J. Shepherd Russell. Burial will be in 
Elmwood Cemetery .
