The Norfolk Virginian Pilot January 25, 1940  


Mrs. Fannie Branch Payne, aged 71, widow of Walter R. Payne, died at her 
residence, 1425 Ashland Avenue, yesterday morning at 6:45 o’clock. She is 
survived by a son, W.R. Payne; two grandsons, Nelson S. and W.R. Payne, Jr.; 
three sisters, Mrs. George W. Hill and the Misses Theresa P. and Annie N. 
Branch, all of Norfolk, and a number of nieces and nephews. Mrs. Payne was a 
native of Isle of Wight County and had been a resident of Norfolk 45 years. She 
was a charter member of the Knox Presbyterian Church and a member of Palmetto 
Grove, Ladies’ Auxiliary, W.O.W.

Funeral services will be conducted at the residence tomorrow afternoon at 2 
o’clock. Burial will be in Elmwood Cemetery.
