He was found Saturday night about 12 o'clock in the mill yard by one of the employees in an unconscious state and was removed to his home, where he was attended by Dr. J.A. Norfleet. He has both eyes black, face lacerated and a bruise on his chest. Mr. Payne says that he thinks he fell and injured himself, while the attending physician thinks that it is probable that he was assaulted, although Mr. Payne is subjected to attacks and fell in a similar manner about eighteen months ago. Note: Corrected name from Nathan to Mathias **************************************************************************** MATHIAS PAYNE DIED FROM INJURIES Mathias Payne, who was injured by a fall or being assaulted in the yard of the Tunis Lumber Company's mill Saturday night, January 29, died last night at 8:30 o'clock at his home on Elizabeth Street, Montalant. The deceased was about sixty-five years of age and leaves a wife and several children. He had been employed by the Tunis company about fifteen years and was very highly regarded. He was a member of Chesapeake Tribe No. 50, I.O.R.M. and Middleton Lodge No. 145 I.O.O.F. The funeral service will be conducted from the residence tomorrow afternoon at 3:30 o'clock. The deceased never recovered from his injuries sustained at the Tunis mill. Brown, on Elizabeth Street, Montalant, will be conducted from the residence this afternoon at 3:30 o'clock with Rev. P.S.C. Davis, pastor of South Norfolk Baptist Church, officiating. The interment will be in Magnolia Cemetery. The deceased was in the 63d year of his age, was a member of the Niemeyer-Shaw Camp Confederate Veterans, Chesapeake Tribe No. 50 Improved Order of Red Men and Oakdale Lodge, No. 70, I.O.O.F., the members of which organizations are requested to attend in a body. See calls of the two lodges in this issue and Commander E.L Cox requests that as many member of Niemeyer-Shaw Camp attend in a body as can. Brown, yesterday afternoon at 3:30 o'clock, Rev. P.S.C. Davis, pastor of South Norfolk Baptist Church, officiating. The interment was in Magnolia Cemetery. A delegation from Middleton Lodge No. 145, I.O.O.F.; Chesapeake Tribe No. 50, I.O.R.M. and Niemeyer-Shaw Camp, Confederate Veterans, of which the deceased was an esteemed member, attended. A beautiful design in the shape of a pillar and having the three links was sent by the Odd Fellows. In addition there were quite a number of beautiful floral offerings.
