Sears in Norfolk's Olde Huntersville neighborhood, was educated at Hampton Institute (Hampton University) where she earned both her Bachelor of Arts and Master's degrees in 1945 and 1950, respectively. Dr. Peevy taught at Booker T. Washington Intermediate School and later at Jacox Junior High School where she was Head Counselor of the Guidance Department. In 1981, she earned her doctorate in Counseling from Virginia Tech. Dr. Peevy retired from Norfolk City Public Schools as a counselor in 1985. Dr. Peevy helped others and served her community all of her life. At her church, the Historic First Baptist Church in Norfolk, she was a Junior Missionary, Sunday School teacher, usher, choir member and Church Clerk. Later in life, she was also an emeritus trustee and a deaconess. Her greatest accomplishment was as chairman of the Pulpit Committee that selected Rev. Dr. Robert G. Murray as the 19th Pastor in 1983. She traveled extensively as 12th National President of Iota Phi Lambda Sorority, Inc. She was the first African American appointed to the Norfolk Electoral Board and was Chair of the Advisory Board for Tidewater Community College. For over 20 years, Dr. Peevy wrote a weekly column for The New Journal and Guide, served as Worthy Matron of Adah Chapter 20 Order of Eastern Star PHA, and was a member of The Coalition of 100 Black Women and The Women's Club of Norfolk. Lott Carey Foreign Mission Convention was close to Dr. Peevy's heart and after retirement, she taught classes at the convention for several years and was elected Chairman of the Board of Lott Carey's Women's Auxiliary. Dr. Peevy is survived by her daughters, Eunice Joseph and Patricia Taylor of Norfolk, daughter-in-law, Lillian Taylor of Midlothian, grandchildren, Aaron P. Taylor of Los Angeles, David Taylor (Meghan) of Springfield, Va., and Dominique Joseph of Alexandria; great-grandchildren, Gavin and Peyton Taylor; siblings, Lt. Col. (Ret.) Charles W. Sears (Katherine) of Columbus, Mrs. Eunice S. Frazier of Hampton, Mrs. Lucy S. McCray (Bobby) of Phoenix, and Mrs. Lula S. Rogers of Chesapeake; godson Bruce Jones (Kizzy); personal aide, Brittany Porter, and a host of nieces, nephews and friends. Dr. Peevy is predeceased by her husband of 35 years, Master Sgt. 1/c (Ret.) Goldmon Peevy and son, Harry "Bucky" Taylor, III. A viewing will be November 17 2- 430pm at Riddick Funeral Service and from 6-8pm at The Murray Center of The Historic First Baptist Church Bute Street; funeral November 18 11am at The Murray Center of The Historic First Baptist Church of Bute Street; burial in Calvary Cemetery Additional Comments: Calvary Cemetery DR.
