NORFOLK - Anthony Marcus Penello Sr., 68, of 408 Bute St., died Sunday in his 
home.
A native of Norfolk, he was the former owner and operator of the Strand Hotel 
and Thalia Motel. He was a stock investor for 45 years and was known as “The 
Howard Hughes of Norfolk.” He was a Catholic.
Survivors include three daughters, Mrs. Antoinette Winstead of Norfolk, Mrs. 
Mary Ann McCauley of Los Angles, and Mrs. Alice Jean Heinewitz of Washington; a 
son, Anthony Marcus Penello Jr. of Norfolk; four sisters, Mrs. Catherine Ellison 
of Oxnard, Calif., Mrs. Mary Bascue of Camarillo, Calif., Mrs. Teresa Forte of 
Chicago, and Mrs. Josephine Mollura of Norfolk; two brothers, John A. Penello of 
Washington and Angelo J. Penello of Norfolk; 10 grandchildren; and three great-
grandchildren.
A funeral service will be held Thursday at 3 p.m. in Cox Funeral Home Chapel by 
Dr. William L. Lumpkin. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery with military 
honors.
