James Edward Petree, aged 75, for nearly 60 years identified with the grocery business in Norfolk and a resident of this city for all of that time, died at 4:22 o'clock yesterday morning at his home 1101 East Ocean View avenue. Mr. Petree was the husband of Mrs. Tamar Ann Whitehurst Petree and the son of the late James E. and Mrs. Mary Brown Petree. he was a native of Princess Anne County. He entered the grocery business at the age of 17 in his father's establishment at Church and Charlotte streets. Later he took over the operation of the store himself. During his many years in the business, he operated stores in various sections, the largest being the Petree- Johnson store on Market street. At his death he was still active in business, being employed in a store at Debree and Thirty-fifth streets. He was a member of the First Methodist, formerly the old Cumberland Street Methodist Church and of the Woodmen of the World. Besides his widow, he is survived by four daughters, Mrs. L. C. Davis and Mrs. R. F. Schaeffer of Norfolk, Mrs. C. T. Mangum of Winston-Salem, N. C. and Mrs. B. W. Johnson of Norfolk, seven grandchildren; two sisters - Mrs. Jennie Waterfield of Norfolk and Mrs. B. J. Diggs of West Palm Beach, Fla. and two brothers Charles Petree of Long Beach, Calif. and W. H. Petree of this city. Funeral services will be held at the chapel of the H. D. Oliver Funeral Apartments, 1501 Colonial avenue, this afternoon at 2 o'clock with the Rev. T. J. Hawkins, pastor of First Methodist Church and the Rev. Henry A. Harrell, pastor of Ocean View Methodist Church, officiating. Burial will be in Elmwood Cemetery.
