April 13, 1951 Spartanburg, April 12-Mrs. Louise Smith Pettis, wife of Prof. Charles S. Pettis of Wofford College, died this afternoon at her home on the Country club road near here after an illness of several months. A native of Newberry, Mrs. Pettis was the daughter of the late Bishop A. Coke and Kate Kinard Smith. She was a graduate of Goucher College, Baltimore, Md., and an active member of Central Methodist Church. Mrs. Pettis taught Latin at Spartanburg High School for 20 years. Besides her husband, survivors include one daughter, Mrs. Cecil L. Sanford of the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill; one son, Dr. B.J. Pettis of Tulane University; three grandchildren, three sisters, Mrs. Charles W. Doughtie and Mrs. Samuel Armistead, both of Norfolk, Va., and Mrs. Russell L. Haden of Ciocet, Va., and three brothers Prof. F. Osgood Smith of Arlington, Va., Prof. E. Ehrlich Smith of Ashland, Va., and Perry Coker Smith of New York City. Funeral arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by Floyd’s mortuary here.
