Norfolk Virginian Pilot Friday July 21, 1944
Mrs. Bertie Sweet Pettus, 72, widow of John Samuel Pettus, died Thursday 
morning at 6:45 o'clock at the residence, 1342 West Thirty-ninth street,
A native of Sentronious,(Sempronius?) Cayuga County, New York, she had been 
a resident of Norfolk for the past 60 years. She was the daughter of the 
late Matthew Lines and Rocelia S. Sweet. She was a member of Martha 
Washington Lodge, D. of A.
Mrs. Pettus is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Rocelia Warren, of Norfolk; 
three sons, W.H., Leroy V. and John C. Pettus, all of Norfolk, and a 
granddaughter. Funeral services will be conducted Saturday afternoon at 3:30 
o'clock in the chapel of James V. Derry by the Rev. C.T. Topping, pastor of 
Old Zion Methodist Church. Interment will be in Elmwood Cemetery.
