Phillips, Esq. The many friends of this estimable young gentleman will regret to hear of his death, which occurred Sunday night at 10:15 at his residence, in Brambleton, after a painful illness of many months’ duration, which he endured with a truly Christian resignation. Mr. Phillips, for nearly eight years, filled the responsible position of Chief Mailing Clerk at the Norfolk Post Office, to which he was appointed by Mr. Glennon when Postmaster. He ranked among the very best of the mailing clerks in the country and enjoyed the confidence and respect of the postal authorities. He held this position until last August, when continual ill health compelled him to resign. Mr. Phillips was very popular with all who knew him. He was the oldest son of Sam’l O. Phillips, Esq., and in his 30th year of age. He was one of the organizers of the Emerald Beneficial Society and the first of the original members to die. He was also a member of Pocahontas Council, Royal Arcanum. He leaves a wife and one child to mourn his loss. Truly may it be said of him that death has removed an affectionate husband and father, a devoted son and brother, and a good citizen. His funeral will take place from St. Mary’s Church at 10 o’clock this morning. Peace to his ashes, and may the flowers, of which he was a devoted lover, always fragrantly bloom over his grave.
