Pitts, who died in Portsmouth on Sunday morning, after having been a great sufferer for several years, took place yesterday at 12 p.m. from St. Paul's Church, in this city. The remains were conveyed to Elmwood Cemetery and there solemnly interred with the usual rites of the Episcopal Church. The deceased, who was the widow of Judge E.P. Pitts, late of this city, was about fifty-four years of age, the daughter of John U. Dennis, of the Eastern Shore of Maryland, and a sister of United States Senator Dennis, of that state. She leaves several children, who reside on the Eastern Shore of Virginia, and had many relatives and friends both there and in Norfolk. Norfolk Virginian March 20, 1877 Page 1 d 3/18 Sudden Death of an Estimable Lady - Mrs. Mary W. Pitts, widow of the late Judge E.P. Pitts, for many years a leading member of the Norfolk bar, died very suddenly at her residence on King Street in this city Sunday morning, about 3 o'clock, of heart disease. She had suffered from the effects of a stroke of paralysis for several years and though sudden, her death was not unexpected. She was a woman of a most exemplary Christian character and had a great many friends in this community. She was about fifty-four years of age and was the daughter of John U. Dennis, of the Eastern Shore of Maryland, and sister to Mr. Dennis, present United States senator from that state. Her funeral took place from St. Paul's Episcopal Church, Norfolk, at 12 o'clock yesterday, which was attended by a large number of friends and relatives and her remains were conveyed to Elmwood Cemetery to be deposited beside those of her husband, who had preceded her only two years. The deceased had several children living on the Eastern Shore of Virginia and many relations and friends residing there as well as in this city.
